Youth & Family Programs
Joy-Southfield CDC is involved in several programs to support local youth and their families, including:
- Joy-Southfield is bringing a farmer's market to the community through collaboration with Detroit Eastern Market, GlobalMed and Second Grace United Methodist Church. Here is an information brochure. Want to sell at the market? Get an application here.
- Looking for fresh fruits and vegetables? We are partnering with Detroit FRESH to help bring healthy food to neighborhood stores. Get the brochure here on this program.
- Urban Roots and Greening of Detroit are helping to develop a community garden. This is an excellent opportunity to grow fruits, flowers and vegetables. We can always use volunteers! Take a look at this video about out community garden program!
- Mentoring at Dixon Elementary School started 21 years ago. We always need caring adults to mentor! If you would like to mentor a student and can make a year long commitment of one hour per week, we want to hear from you.
- During the school year, the second Saturday is dedicated to tutoring K-8 students by high school students and adults. Students get help with any academic area they want to improve upon. And, teachers give extra credit to students who attend. Spread the word!
- The Read and Be Well program is for budding authors interested in writing books to share with the community through a partnership with Dixon Elementary and Novi Community Schools.
Contact the Director of Youth & Family Development via email or call (313)581-7773 if you are interested in hearing more about these vital programs or volunteer your time and expertise.
