Over the past year we have provided health care services to over 250 families and educated over 400 families about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Laboratory services are provided by St. Mary Mercy Hospital.

Service Goals of the Health & Education Center include:

1.     Improve the health status of the Joy-Southfield community through expanded access to primary and preventative care.

2.    Provide a patient home for underinsured residents of the community, such that timely management of chronic illnesses reduces dependence on emergency departments.

3.    Build a permanent facility that is dedicated to and designed for the provision of health care services.

4.    Provide regular life style management education programs designed to assist community residents in preventing, minimizing and controlling the occurrence of preventable acute health incidences.

5.    Become recognized as a provider of quality primary and preventative health care for the poor and underinsured segments of the Joy-Southfield community.

6.    Attract federal and local grants to help sustain the operation of the clinic and make it a long-term source of health care for residents in this community.

The community that we serve is located on the far west side of Detroit, Michigan and consists of approximately 20,000 residents, 70 percent of whom are African-American, 5 percent Hispanic, 5 percent middle-eastern descent and 20 percent white.  20 percent of the residents in the community live below the federal standard for poverty.  30 percent of the children under the age of 18 live below the federal standard for poverty and over 25 percent of the residents above the age of 18 lack a high school diploma.

Access to affordable health care is a pressing need in our community.  As a result of the absence of primary care physician establishments and lack of health insurance, the community is affected with rates of communicable diseases, infant mortality and cardiovascular related deaths that approach 2 to 3 times the levels experienced in the rest of the state.  This rate of hospitalization for preventable causes for people aged 40–64 within our community and adjacent areas is the highest in the United States.

The use of hospital emergency rooms to address acute health incidences that could have been prevented by regular visits to a primary care office exacerbates an ailing municipal health system.

Startling Statistics:

·    ·    American spend $5,267 per capita on health care every year, almost two-and-a-half times the industrialized world’s median of $2,193 and more than any other nation.

·    ·    Americans have a lower life expectancy than residents in 28 other developed nations, we rank 28th in infant mortality and last in deaths from heart disease.

·    ·    Almost 50 million Americans are uninsured with another 100 million classified “underinsures” (they must choose between medicines and other life necessities).

·    ·    Lack of insurance compromises the health of the uninsured because they receive less preventive care, are diagnosed at more advanced disease stages, and once diagnosed, tend to receive less therapeutic care and have higher mortality rates.

·    ·    The life expectancy of someone with insurance is 4.5 years longer than a person without insurance.

·          In Michigan, we spend more than $1.1 Billion to provide uninsured residents with health services, often for preventable diseases or disease that could be treated more efficiently with earlier diagnosis.  This will grow to $1.6 Billion by 2010.

Our facility is designated a Free Clinic by the State of Michigan.  As such, we are staffed by Volunteers.   If you are interested in volunteering for reception, security, Medical Assistant, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Physician positions, please contact www.volunteermatch.org and complete the online contact information or call the Center at 313-581-7773.
